1
If possible, install a HEPA-filtration system in your HVAC system or have your ducts professionally cleaned. Regularly replace air filters specifically made to capture allergens and other microscopic particles.
-
2
Avoid carpeting if you can, and install hardwood, tile or linoleum wherever possible. Depending on the severity and cause of your allergies, you may want to install flooring that is antimicrobial and free from irritating chemical adhesives. If you decide to use throw rugs, buy the kind that can easily and regularly be washed in the washing machine in hot water.
-
3
When insulating or replacing insulation, use spray insulation as opposed to traditional fiber-fill insulation rolls that can release allergy-inducing particles into the air and collect dust and dust mites.
-
4
Set air purifiers up in rooms where you spend a lot of time, like bedrooms and the family room.
-
5
Install dehumidifiers in damp areas like the basement and garage to avoid mold and mildew.
-
6
Clean up mold and mildew as soon as you notice it. A simple water and tea tree oil spray (equal parts of each) is an effective, non-toxic way to combat both mold and mildew in the home without the use of harsh and irritating chemicals.
-
7
Vacuum at least twice a week using a vacuum with a HEPA filter vacuum. If you have pets, vacuum even more often. An allergen-reducing carpet spray can also be used if allergies are severe or if dust and pollen counts are high.
-
8
Purchase allergy-blocking covers for pillows and mattresses. Wash bedding every week in hot water to kill dust mites.
