Rye Allergy Symptoms

Rye is a grain crop that's used to make things like bread. While not as popular as wheat, it is harvested all over the world. As with other grains, some people can have allergic reactions to rye. Symptoms can be mild or severe and may be different in different people. Those with grain allergies or allergies to rye should avoid consuming it. If someone allergic consumes the grain or comes in contact with it, a doctor should be consulted to make sure the symptoms don't worsen.
  1. Skin Rash

    • Skin rashes are common with food allergies. They can be both mild or severe. A mild reaction can be a light pink to pink skin rash that is hot to the touch --- often a little swelling will appear. A more severe reaction is in the form of hives or eczema. With any skin rash, a doctor should be consulted immediately.

    Itching

    • Itching can be caused by a skin rash, but it doesn't have to be. Often, an allergic reaction to rye can cause itching in the eyes, throat, and roof of the mouth. This can be aggravating and you should seek medical attention for some relief.

    Swelling

    • Swelling can come in various ways. A rash can cause swelling, but more often you will see bloating when rye is ingested. Swelling can also occur in the face and throat. This can restrict airways, making it difficult to breathe. If this occurs, medical attention should be sought immediately to prevent the symptoms from getting worse.

    Upset Stomach

    • Nausea is common with food allergies, especially when the food has inadvertently been consumed. The nausea can be accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea. If vomiting or diarrhea occurs for a prolonged length of time, dehydration can occur. This can be dangerous and medical treatment will need to be provided.

    Headaches

    • A headache is caused by pain in the nerve endings around the brain. Headaches can range from a dull pain that lasts a few hours to a full blown migraine. If a headache can't be treated using an over the counter pain reliever, a doctor can be consulted for solutions to easing the discomfort.

    Difficulty Breathing

    • Difficulty breathing is usually caused by blocked airways. This stems from swelling in the face or throat. However, it's also a symptom on its own. Wheezing or asthma attacks are common with rye allergies and medical attention should be immediately sought.
