Celery Allergy Symptoms

One of the most common allergies is a food allergy. While the most common food allergies stem from foods like nuts and fruits, people can be allergic to celery, too. As with other food allergies, symptoms can occur within minutes of consuming celery to up to five days after eating the vegetable.

  1. Vomiting and Diarrhea

    • When something that's toxic to the body is consumed, the body's natural reaction is to purge it from the system. Vomiting and diarrhea are two ways to rid the body of toxins and are common with allergic reactions. If these symptoms continue for an extended period of time, a doctor should be consulted so the body doesn't become dehydrated.

    Skin Rash

    • Skin rashes may or may not be severe and are a common symptom of an allergic reaction. While not seen in every person, the skin rash can include hives, swelling or eczema. The rash may also be itchy and hot to the touch.

    Swelling

    • While swelling can occur anywhere on the skin, with a celery allergy it's most common in the face and throat. Someone having an allergic reaction can experience slight swelling, but if the reaction is severe, the swelling can be as well. A doctor should be consulted with any swelling of the face or throat as this can easily constrict the airway, making it difficult to breathe.

    Difficulty Breathing

    • Wheezing can occur with any allergic reaction, but difficulty breathing can also occur when the face and throat swell. As with other allergic reactions arising from food, when exposed to celery someone who is allergic may swell quickly. The swelling can constrict the airway and hamper the ability to breathe. In this situation, medical attention should be sought immediately.

    Drop in Blood Pressure

    • When your blood pressure drops, you may feel dizziness or nausea. Being light-headed can be a symptom of other maladies, but if it's suspected to be from an allergic reaction to celery, a health care professional should be contacted to prevent symptoms from worsening.

    Anaphylaxis

    • Anaphylaxis is the most dangerous symptom of a celery allergy. It's common with food and insect stings and can be fatal. Someone experiencing anaphylaxis will have severe swelling of the face and throat that constricts the airway, making it impossible to breathe. They could also quickly experience shock, which if left untreated can be fatal.
