What Are the Symptoms of a Pasta Allergy?

Pasta is processed with wheat, so its symptoms mirror those of people who suffer from wheat allergies. Most food allergies, including pasta allergies, begin in early childhood and often disappear or lessen by adulthood. Because wheat is so prevalent in a variety of different foods, it makes it challenging to make food choices. But manufacturers make wheat- and gluten-free products.
  1. Allergic Rhinitis

    • Pasta allergy symptoms most often mirror allergic rhinitis, the inflammation of the nasal cavity that provokes nasal congestion and itchy, watery eyes. Besides those symptoms, sufferers complain of nasal drip, sore throat, plugged ears, excessive fatigue, swollen eyelids and stuffy headaches. They may also experience some wheezing, but not from asthma.

    Asthma

    • Pasta allergies may also trigger asthma attacks, the inflammation of the bronchial airways that provokes the constriction of the airway tubes. Common asthmatic symptoms include difficulty breathing, especially at night, and wheezing. Asthma sufferers may feel tight chest pain and suffer from a chronic cough that worsens in the early morning or late at night, or after vigorous activity.

    Hives

    • Hives, formally known as urticaria, occur when there's an allergic reaction to something, as in a pasta allergy. Hives vary in size and shape. They can appear anywhere on the body, from the stomach and back, to the face and lips, to arms and hands. Hives are very itchy, though sometimes they also burn and sting--and scratching makes them worse. An antihistamine such as Benadryl helps reduce some of the swelling. Hives can last a few hours, or a day or two. If they're severe, call your doctor.

    Gastric Problems

    • Pasta allergy sufferers experience digestive issues. They may feel nauseated or endure painful stomach cramps before vomiting. They may also experience severe acid indigestion. In rare cases, some may suffer from Oral Allergy Syndrome, swelling of the lips and mouth, right after consuming the offending food.

    Anaphylaxis

    • Some people suffer from a severe reaction to wheat and pasta called anaphylaxis. This requires medical treatment with an epinephrine shot and a trip to the hospital. Symptoms can occur very rapidly, sometimes within seconds, and always within 2 hours. They include a narrowing of breathing airways--often with a swollen throat, making it extra hard to breathe--and going into shock. Dizziness and a rapid pulse are possible.
