Allergy Medicine Side Effects

Most people get what they want out of allergy medicines, which is relief from bothersome allergy symptoms. They may experience mild side effects, such as sleepiness or indigestion, but these minor issues are well worth the relief the allergy medicine provides. However, there are some side effects that are unpleasant or even life-threatening.

  1. Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Allergy medicine can cause some gastrointestinal side effects, such as an upset stomach, nausea or diarrhea. The best way to avoid these side effects is to take the medicine as directed, such as with a full glass of water. Eating something before you take the allergy medicine is another way to reduce the chances of experiencing indigestion.

    Circulatory Side Effects

    • You may experience some dizziness when taking allergy medicines. Some allergy medicines can also make your heart beat irregularly or faster than normal, or may cause you to notice your heartbeat when you normally do not feel it. Allergy medicines can cause your blood vessels to constrict, limiting blood flow, which causes these types of side effects.

    Skin-Related Side Effects

    • With some allergy medicines, you may experience a rash or hives on your skin. Intense itching can also be a skin-related side effect. This type of side effect usually indicates an allergy to something contained within the allergy medicine. It is best to discontinue use and talk to your doctor if you experience any skin-related side effects.

    Nervous System Side Effects

    • Allergy medicines can sometimes have side effects on your nervous system, although this is very rare. Some of these side effects include uncontrollable shaking and seizures. You can also experience hallucinations while taking allergy medicine. If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical attention immediately.

    Other Side Effects

    • Other side effects include sleepiness, nervousness, weakness or increased anxiety. You may have difficulty falling asleep or waking up while taking allergy medicines. In rare cases, you may experience extreme swelling all over your body, including feet, legs, hands, face, lips, or throat. As with other serious side effects, it is best to seek medical attention immediately before this or other side effects become life-threatening.
