What is Astelin Nasal Spray?
Astelin is a prescription nasal spray used to relieve symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and postnasal drip caused by seasonal allergies and other irritants in the environment. It is FDA-approved for use in people ages 12 and older. Astelin is to be used twice a day by spraying it once directly into each nostril. Before you use it, you should first blow your nose to clear out nasal passages.-
How It Works
-
Astelin is an antihistamine spray. It works by blocking the body's production of histamine, which will help reduce allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing.
Non-Serious Side Effects
-
Some people who use Astelin experience a brief stinging or burning sensation in the nose after it is sprayed. Other side effects include mild nosebleeds, sore throat, a dry mouth or a bitter taste in the mouth, dizziness, cough, drowsiness, nausea or sudden sneezing attacks.
Serious Side Effects
-
Some side effects of Astelin should be reported to your doctor because they may signal a problem that requires treatment. Stop using Astelin and inform your doctor if you experience severe nasal irritation or chronic and persistent nosebleeds.
Warnings
-
People using Astelin should not drink alcohol, and because it may cause drowsiness or dizziness users should not operate vehicles or perform other tasks requiring concentration until they know how it will affect them. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss the pros and cons of using Astelin before taking it.
Drug Interactions
-
Like all medicines, Astelin can affect the way some drugs work in your body and intensify the side effects. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking cimetidine and drugs that cause drowsiness, including other antihistamines, anti-seizure and anti-anxiety drugs, sleep aids, muscle relaxants and certain pain relievers.
