Erythema Multiforme in Children
Erythema multiforme is an allergic skin reaction to infections or illness, and more rarely to medications. The exact cause is unknown. Most cases involve adolescents and children. Reactions to infections and illness are usually mild compared with reactions to medication.-
Associated Conditions
-
Most erythema multiforme is associated with herpes simplex, such as a cold sore, or with mycoplasma, or fungal, infections.
Lesions
-
The first erythema multiforme lesions appear as an attempt by the body to eliminate the virus or infection. The lesions then typically spread to other areas.
Additional Symptoms
-
Children might have symptoms of a fever, joint aches, and eye pain and burning, in addition to the skin lesions and itching.
Recurring Episodes
-
Some children with recurring cold sores can have recurring episodes of erythema multiforme, which can be controlled with anti-herpes medicine.
Time Frame
-
Individual episodes of erythema multiforme usually heal within two weeks.
