Causes of Nasal Allergies

Nasal allergies--the congestion, runny nose and sneezing you experience--are a reaction from your immune system because it cannot process the offending item properly. Nasal allergy symptoms, called allergic rhinitis, can be minimized simply by staying away from the matter that is causing you discomfort. Finding that cause may be a little more challenging, as there are many causes of nasal allergies that all produce similar symptoms.
  1. Outdoor Elements

    • Many people have allergic rhinitis in the spring due to high pollen counts. Some allergy sufferers are allergic to specific plants and flowers, while others develop a runny nose or other nasal symptoms when the world is in bloom.

    Allergens in the Home

    • Dust mites and molds that are present in your home can also produce nasal allergy symptoms. Frequent vacuuming can cut down on dust mites. Cleaning walls and other damp, mildewed areas with a bleach-and-water solution can eliminate molds that may cause your allergies.

    Pets

    • Pets, most commonly cats and dogs, are a common cause of nasal allergies. In addition to being allergens themselves to some people, animals are likely to retain pollen on their fur, creating more cases of nasal allergies.

    Churg-Strauss Syndrome

    • Churg-Strauss is a medical condition that involves the abnormal inflammation of blood vessels. The syndrome is also called allergic granulomatosis. Symptoms vary from person to person, as explained by the Mayo Clinic, but one symptom that is common is hay fever, or nasal allergies.

    Treatment

    • Antihistamines such as Benadryl or Claritin can help reduce or eliminate the nasal allergy symptoms you experience when it is not possible to avoid the source of your allergic reaction.
