Long-Term Side Effects of Zyrtec
Zyrtec is one of the most common allergy medications on the market and has been proven to be an effective drug. However, like most other medications, taking Zyrtec long term does increase the risk of serious side-effects which can become long-term health issues of not treated quickly.-
Insomnia
-
One of the most common long-term side effects of Zyrtec use is the inability to have a good night's sleep. While this usually wears off in time, some have had to enter into treatment programs to resolve their insomnia issues.
Swelling
-
Some people experience swelling which can last for several days. While it is most often confined to the fingers or hands, occasionally the tongue or throat will swell and make breathing difficult. This is not a common side effect.
Mood Changes
-
While not as severe as mood swings, sudden changes in one's mood have been reported days, even weeks after Zyrtec use has stopped. It is rare, but quite serious.
Irregular Heartbeat
-
Irregular heartbeats, no matter the cause, are serious and can lead to cardiac arrest or other heart problems. This is another side effect of Zyrtec that is well documented.
Fatigue
-
While it is not uncommon to be fatigued while taking a particular medication, once you stop taking this medication, you should begin to feel more energetic. However, in the case of Zyrtec these effects can last for several days (up to a week) after you stop taking the drug.
