What are the Different Types of Mold Allergies?

Many types of molds can cause a response in an allergic individual, but only a few common molds elicit allergic responses in allergic and non-allergic individuals. Because molds can be found indoors, outside and on common foods, they are grouped together as one type of allergy.
  1. Alternaria

    • Alternaria is a dark colored, outdoor mold. It is commonly found on window sills and is the type of mold that can cause black spots on tomatoes.

    Aspergillus

    • Aspergillus grows on most anything that is damp, indoors or out. It thrives in warm temperatures and can be found in soil, tobacco and decaying vegetables.

    Cladosporium or Hormodendrum

    • This abundant mold can be found indoors and out, and is often found in natural products like wood, leather, paper and rubber.

    Fusarium

    • Commonly found in the soil, on grasses and plants, this antifungal resistant mold is often seen on fruits and vegetables.

    Penicillium

    • This well- known mold is recognized by its fruity smell, and is often found on stale bread and fruits. The strains of penicillium are used to create the antibiotic penicillin, though they are not the same strains normally found on foods.

    Rhizopus

    • This rapidly growing mold is often found indoors on breads and fruits. It starts out as a powdery white mold that quickly turns black.
