Fruit Allergy Symptoms

Fruit allergies, also referred to as oral allergy syndrome (OAS), are the result of a reaction between proteins in fresh fruits and vegetables, which can cause a similar immune reaction to that of pollen. Cooking or processing helps generally break the proteins down so problems do not occur. However, it is important to recognize the signs of a fruit allergy so that proper and appropriate measures can be taken.
  1. Itching or Burning

    • Itchiness, burning or hives around the mouth area is a possible symptom of fruit allergies.

    Cold-Like Feeling

    • Watery, itching eyes, sneezing, a runny nose or inflamed eyelids occurring right after consuming an offending food may be indicative of a food allergy.

    Gastrointestinal Problems

    • Sometimes, a person with a fruit allergy might experience gastrointestinal symptoms, such as stomach cramping and vomiting.

    Asthma

    • An asthma attack could be a rare but serious sign of a food allergy and might be coupled with rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, pain or tightness in the chest, fever or a headache.

    Anaphylaxis

    • In severe cases, anaphylaxis can occur. Signs of this condition include trouble breathing due to blocked airways, anxiety, low blood pressure, vomiting and diarrhea. Injections of epinephrine may be required.
