Gluten Allergy Symptoms in Infants

Gluten is the protein portion of wheat. It is found in all products that contain wheat, rye or barley. If infants are fed foods containing gluten and they are allergic, several symptoms can arise.
  1. Irritability

    • Infants can become very irritable and cry for long periods of time if they have a gluten allergy.

    Spitting Up

    • Vomiting and spitting up are commonly seen when infants are allergic to gluten. Stomach cramps are also common.

    Diarrhea

    • Gluten does not break down in the stomach, so it can cause diarrhea.

    Rash

    • Infants are also prone to rashes. These can appear as red blotches and can be seen anywhere on the body.

    Breathing, Runny Nose

    • Infants can also show altered breathing patterns and a runny nose.

    Swelling

    • There can be noticeable swelling of the lips, face and possibly the tongue. In the worst of cases, the throat can swell shut.
