Almond Allergy Symptoms in Infants

Food allergies can be difficult to spot, especially with infants. Since a baby can't tell you what is wrong or what they are feeling it can be harder to diagnose the problem. This doesn't mean it's impossible, there are signs to watch for with almond allergies even in infants. If these signs occur a doctor should be consulted right away.
  1. Rash

    • A baby may develop a rash shortly after he has consumed almonds or something with almond flavoring. While the severity varies per infant, it could be a slightly pink rash, hives or anything in between. Any sign of a skin rash could be from an almond allergy and the infant should see a doctor right away.

    Wheezing

    • Wheezing or shortness of breath is a common allergic reaction to almonds. With an infant it may be hard to tell, watch her chest when she is breathing. If you see short quick breaths or the baby's lips look an odd purple/blue color, consult a physician.

    Diarrhea

    • While diarrhea can be caused by numerous things, it is also a symptom of almond allergies. If it continues, it can cause dehydration.

    Vomiting

    • Vomiting is another sign of an almond allergy, but can also mean different things. With an almond allergy if vomiting occurs, it should happen within a few hours after consuming the almonds.

    Abdominal Swelling

    • A child's abdomen normally protrudes more than an adults, however if the belly area appears to stick out more than usual it could be from an almond allergy.

    Swelling in Mouth and Throat

    • Swelling in the mouth and throat can make it difficult to swallow and breathe. Using a small pen flashlight can make it easier to see down and infants throat. If there is swelling, consult a doctor immediately.
