Symptoms of Allergies in Toddlers
You may be wondering if your toddler's chronic runny nose or other condition may be due to allergies. Allergies are becoming more commonplace in our world. More and more children have allergies, and toddlers are included in that group. Allergic reactions can vary from minor to severe.-
Causes
-
Seasonal allergens are a common cause of allergies in toddlers. These include pollen allergies such as cedar, oak, ragweed and grass. Other causes include mold, pet dander and dust mites. Some toddlers can also be allergic to food ingredients such as peanuts, milk or eggs.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms for allergies in toddlers often resemble cold symptoms. It can be difficult to tell the difference. A cold usually goes away in seven to 10 days, but allergies stick around. Some symptoms include a clear runny nose, sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. Itchy patches or rashes can also appear on your toddler's skin. If your child's symptoms seem severe or do not go away, consult your pediatrician.
Treatment
-
Two common medicines given for allergies are Zyrtec and Claritin, which are now sold over the counter. Other medicines can be prescribed by your doctor. Be sure to follow dosing instructions carefully and consult your pediatrician before giving any medication for the first time to your child. Some other options to alleviate symptoms include saline drops, a nasal aspirator and the use of a cool mist humidifier.
Considerations
-
If your child suffers from seasonal allergies, make sure to stay indoors, especially during the early morning hours when pollen counts are highest. Be sure to avoid foods that contain an allergen if your child has a food allergy.
Effects
-
Allergies can cause your toddler to be tired and irritable. He may not be able to sleep well due to congestion, and can be fatigued from not sleeping well. Allow her to get plenty of rest, and make sure she is drinking plenty of fluids.
