Rash Symptoms for Infants With Food Allergies

The same types of food are responsible for almost all food allergies and sensitivities in both infants and adults, and these include eggs, milk, nuts, wheat, soy and seafood. Food allergies that are most prevalent in children are milk, eggs and peanuts. Food allergies usually disappear by age 10. In babies, the first sign of a food allergy is often a rash.

  1. Rash Symptoms

    • Rash symptoms for infants with food allergies typically result in eczema, causing dry, scaly patches on the face, arms or legs. The rash can look like hives.

    Additional Symptoms

    • In addition to rash symptoms, the baby may also have facial swelling, wheezing, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Any symptoms usually appear within 2 hours of eating the allergy-causing food.

    Age Considerations

    • Rashes in babies with food allergies tend to appear less often by 1 year of age, and the allergies then usually are signified by respiratory issues.

    Later Allergy Development

    • Infants can develop a rash reaction to a particular type of food even if they have eaten it before with no problems.

    Severe Reactions

    • If the infant seems to have trouble breathing, has facial swelling, or if the vomiting or diarrhea is severe, the caretaker should call 911 or the pediatrician immediately.
