Be aware of which foods contain mold as part of normal circumstances. These foods can cause mold allergies and should be avoided, such as mushrooms, which are fungi, Bleu and Swiss cheese, which are created with mold, smoked meat and fish, canned fruits and vegetables and canned juices.

The next thing to do is be careful of foods which can become moldy. Any foods made with yeast can fall into this category, such as breads or baked products. This also includes boxed items, such as pancake or cake mixes. Make sure to use these by the expiration date indicated on the box. If you notice condensation on plastic wrapping, this is a sign of moisture and mold.

If you use meat, such as beef or poultry, a good way to recognize a food mold, which causes allergies, is the color. Grey, green or dark reddish-brown are signs that the food is past its age and beginning to get mold. If the meat has a slimy feeling or a slight film to it, mold is in the meat.

Fresh vegetables prone to food mold are usually either a darker color than normal or begin to show bruising. Another way to recognize food mold is if the vegetable is beginning to split open. This means the gases from the mold are erupting and causing the skin to break.

Recognizing food mold on fruit is a harder. Obvious signs of mold are white patches appearing on the skins. Not so obvious signs include a darkening of the pulp or meaty insides. If you notice dark spots anywhere inside the skin or meat of the fruit, discard it, as mold has most likely spread.
