1
Develop a self-awareness of your body before you take antihistamines. Most people have a sense of what feels "right" to them. If you do not feel "right" while taking medication, you will have a point of reference to use when discussing side effects with your doctor.
-
2
Read the drug information about the antihistamine you are taking. Side effects are listed on the box, on a leaflet included with prescription medications and on most manufacturers' websites. Knowing which side effects are associated with your particular medication can help you recognize and alleviate them.
-
3
Determine whether you are having common side effects, such as a dry mouth, from antihistamines or for another reason, by ruling out other causes. For example, if you have recently eaten highly salted food, you may feel thirsty and have a dry mouth. If this is not the case and drinking water does not reduce your symptoms, it may well be a side effect of the medication.
-
4
Record your patterns of rest to help recognize side effects such as extreme fatigue. If you are taking a first-generation antihistamine (brompheniramine, diphenhydramine and doxylamine are the most common) and cannot keep your eyes open, you are most likely being affected by the medication. Sleepiness is an important side effect to be aware of so you can avoid driving during the times you are most affected.
-
5
Keep an eye out for serious side effects, such as sudden weakness, swelling in your face or mouth and shortness of breath. If you experience any of these issues, it is imperative that you stop taking the antihistamine immediately and seek medical attention.
