How to Treat an Iodine Allergy

Allergic reactions to iodine may cause a rash, itching, blistering, throat swelling, bleeding, fever, joint pains, hives and other allergy symptoms including death. Avoid iodine and iodine-based products if you know you have allergies to iodine. Treat the symptoms of an allergic reaction to alleviate pain and discomfort.   Treat skin reactions such as a rash, hives and itching with oral antihistamines and oral or topical corticosteroids. Purchase antihistamines like Benadryl at your local pharmacy to treat your allergy symptoms. Visit your doctor for a prescription corticosteroid or pick up a topical cortisone cream at your local drug store to relieve skin inflammation, itching or symptoms caused by allergies.

  Use a bronchodilator, prescribed by your doctor for allergies, to alleviate coughing, lung congestion and to widen your airways. Contact your doctor if you experience difficulty breathing or other respiratory difficulties following the use of iodine or products containing iodine.

  Call for emergency assistance if you experience serious anaphylactic symptoms such as difficulty breathing or any loss of consciousness. A shot of epinephrine may be needed to treat a life-threatening allergic reaction.

  Notify your doctor and emergency personal if you have an allergy to iodine or iodine containing products. Avoid using iodine on cuts or other injuries. Check all medications to see if they contain iodine and notify your pharmacist of your iodine allergy.
