Activities for Alzheimers & Blind Patients

Alzheimer's is a progressive degenerative disease in which a person loses his memory. Patients with this disease will not remember the basic knowledge of keeping up with hygiene, the names of family members and basic language skills. Activities for a patient with Alzheimer's could also be very beneficial for patients who are blind. Some similar activities used in treatment involve listening to music, pet therapy and basic life skills.
  1. Pet Therapy

    • Some patients respond positively to animals. Introducing animals to a patient with Alzheimer's or patients who are blind can be very relaxing and comforting. Any animal can be used, including dogs, cats, birds or rabbits. The patients can get involved with taking care of them, such as feeding, cleaning them or walking them. Blind patients may eventually want to obtain a Seeing Eye dog to guide them in their everyday lives. This will give them a sense of independence in not having to rely on another person to get things accomplished.

    Music Therapy

    • Playing music for patients who are blind or have Alzheimer's can be very relaxing. They can involve themselves in singing along with the lyrics and dancing.

    Life Skills

    • The blind don't want to have to rely on anyone. They want to do things for themselves. Teaching them how to fold their own clothes, cleaning up after themselves or cooking will give them a sense of independence. Having a patient with Alzheimer's do such chores will help slow down the progression of the disease. It is very important for a person suffering from Alzheimer's to remain active every day.
