Difference Between Delirium & Alzheimers

Delirium and Alzheimer's are two different medical conditions that have some of the same symptoms but some significant differences as well. Because of these shared symptoms, delirium is often mistaken for Alzheimer's, according to the Agency of Healthcare and Research.

Features

• Delirium is sudden severe mental confusion . Alzheimer's disease is a progressive loss of brain function, cognitive abilities, and memory.

Causes

• The exact cause of delirium is not known, but it can be triggered by a serious physical illness such as an infection or a mental illness. Drug interactions, strokes, head injuries, sleep deprivation, and various other medical conditions can cause delirium.

  The cause of Alzheimer's is also not known, but certain risk factors may contribute to the disease. The risk of Alzheimer's increases with age; heredity and genetics factors also increase its possibility.

Symptoms

• Delirium and Alzheimer's can share some of the same symptoms, such as disorientation, anxiety, and confusion. Delirium symptoms show up quickly and can change drastically in a matter of hours. Alzheimer's onset is slow and gradual, occurring over of period of months or years.

Treatment

• Delirium is usually temporary and can be reversed once the underlying medical condition is treated.

  Alzheimer's is permanent and progressive. There is no cure at this time only treatment to delay progression and manage symptoms.

Considerations

• Although both delirium and Alzheimer's need proper medical treatment, delirium should be discussed with a physician right away to determine if it indicates the presence of any serious illness.
