Medications Used for Dementia
Having a loved one who suffers from dementia is never easy. The odd behavior alone is enough to transform your loved one into someone you don't recognize, but doctors can prescribe a number of medications to mitigate the symptoms.-
Cholinesterase Inhibitors
-
Drugs such as Aricept, Exelon and Razadyne boost the levels of chemicals that affect memory and judgment. Side effects can include vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.
Memantine
-
Memantine is an Alzheimer's drug that regulates chemicals which affect brain function and might improve memory and learning. Common side effects include dizziness.
Antidepressants
-
Doctors might prescribe a type of antidepressant called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) to treat mood problems associated with dementia. Delirium is a possible side effect, so dementia patients should be watched closely if the doctor prescribes these.
Antipsychotic Drugs
-
Some doctors use antipsychotic drugs to treat anxiety, delusions, behavior problems and sleep problems, although the FDA has not approved these drugs to treat dementia. Common antipsychotic drugs include Risperdal and Zyprexa.
Other Drugs
-
Doctors also might prescribe medications to treat high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes because these conditions sometimes contribute to dementia.
