How to Lessen the Risk of Alzheimer's Disease

The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease increases with age. While there is no guaranteed immunity, there are certain things you can and should be doing that may lessen your risk. Alzheimer's is a disease that affects your brain. According to Heather Hershberger, executive director of the Greater Indiana Chapter Alzheimer's Association, lifestyle can affect brain health.

The Alzheimer's Association's recommendations to reduce the risk include a healthy, physically and socially active lifestyle as well as healthy nutrition.

Instructions

    • 1

Eat a brain healthy diet. Dark skinned fruits, foods high in antioxidants and low in saturated fats, as well as baked or grilled foods instead of fried foods should be a major part of your diet.

    • 2

Avoid foods and personal products that contain nitrates and nitrites. Although the effects of nitrates and nitrites on the brain are not fully understood, recent research* suggests that there is a link between eating nitrates and nitrites and an increased risk of Alzheimer's. Processed meats, ground meats, cured meats and cheeses, beer, wine and even some cosmetics contain these compounds.

    • 3

Exercise on a regular basis. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, and is necessary for the formation of new brain cells. The exercise does not need to be strenuous. Participating in team sports, walking and taking the stairs instead of the elevator can all be helpful in keeping the brain healthy.

    • 4

Use your brain. Research has shown that people that stay mentally active may boost the brain's vitality and even help to create a reserve of new brain cells. Reading, writing, puzzles and staying on top of current events are all ways to keep the brain active.

    • 5

Be socially active. Research has shown that this may also help prevent the onset of dementia. Try volunteering, participating in cultural events and work to develop personal relationships.
