Alzheimer's Test Diagnosis

Alzheimer's disease diagnosis is imperative in treating the illness. Early detection will help with treatment and medications that may slow progression and alleviate some symptoms.
  1. Protein Test

    • A spinal tap measures two types of proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid, an excellent predictor that helps diagnose mild Alzheimer's. The study reveals if plaques and tangles have formed on these proteins, which often leads to Alzheimer's.

    Word Test

    • A simple word-recall test, like having the patient name as many animals as she can in a minute, is a good indicator.

    TYM

    • TYM, or test your memory, is a cognitive test involving 10 simple tasks, including how to copy a sentence, simple math problems and how items relate to one another.

    DIY

    • Question-and-answer tests are available online to help predict and diagnosis Alzheimer's. They are free, and ask very simple and straightforward yes/no questions.

    Medical History

    • During a full medical checkup, a doctor will review medical history, prescription use, physical activities and lifestyle. Family members may also be consulted.

    Blood Tests and MRI

    • A full blood and urine workup may be taken to rule out other illnesses. An MRI or brain scan may also be done to eliminate the presence of tumors or blood clots.
