How Long Does Aricept Last?
Aricept, the most widely used treatment for Alzheimer's, has proven to be an excellent way to ward off the effects of this horrible mind-numbing disease. But how does it work and how long does it work?-
History
-
Aricept was approved for treatment of early to mid-stage Alzheimer's in 1996 by the FDA. In 2006, it was extended for use in treatment of severe Alzheimer's.
Aricept (donepezil HCI) is manufactured and distributed by Pfizer, and is available by prescription only in 5mg and 10 mg tablets.
Function
-
It is believed that Alzheimer's disease is caused by a chemical (acetylcholine) breakdown in the brain, which impairs the brains' ability to carry messages from cell to cell. Over time, the cells that control the important body functions break down as well. Aricept is a cholinesterace inhibitor that helps prevent this breakdown.
Benefits
-
According to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, one in eight persons over the age of 65 is in one of the stages of Alzheimers, which is the sixth leading cause of death. Once a diagnosis is given, the average life span of the victim is 11 years, but can be anywhere from 2-20 years.
Aricept adds years of relatively normal living to the victim's life. It may allow the victim to live longer at home, be healthier and happier.
Time Frame
-
It has been difficult to determine how long Alzheimer's patients gain benefits from using Aricept, because the disease itself progresses at different rates with different people. Another medicine, Namenda (memantine HCI), can be added when Aricept seems to not be working as well, but not all persons tolerate it well, nor does it help everyone.
Conclusions could be drawn that Aricept should be continued for the life span of the patient, since as soon as it is stopped the brain cells deteriorate, allowing the disease to progress.
Considerations
-
As a caregiver or patient, you should partner with your physician to make sure you have the newest information on the disease as well as any new developments or medications.
