Can a fall cause abdominal aortic aneurysm?
While an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture can occur suddenly, usually there are no symptoms. Therefore, most people don’t know that any rupture or leakage has happened. In cases of severe leakage or rupture, the leaking blood quickly forms a large blood clot around the aorta. This large clot can suddenly block blood flow through the aorta, causing severe pain in the abdomen, back and groin, and usually leads to death. However, a fall itself would not cause an AAA. Risk factors for AAA include: Advanced age, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, certain genetic conditions, and family history of AAA.
