Ultrasound is a popular choice for screening exams for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. It is a relatively safe imaging method because it does not use ionizing radiation to acquire images. Ionizing radiation is the type of radiation used with X-ray and computed tomographic (CT) imaging. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to acquire images.   Schedule the appointment for early in the morning so you will not go hungry throughout the day of the procedure.

  Eat a healthy and filling meal the night before the exam. You may wish to avoid foods that cause gas for you.

  Do not eat anything within the eight-hour period prior to the exam. This allows bowel gas to subside so the aorta can be seen using ultrasound.

  Arrive at the hospital or clinic 15 minutes before the exam, or as you were directed when you made your appointment.

  If the exam is taking place at a hospital, go to Patient Registration to let them know that you have arrived and to sign any paperwork that is required by the hospital.

  Go to the department where the ultrasound will take place. The ultrasound technician will call your name when it is time to do the exam.
