What is meant by material deprivation?

Material deprivation refers to situations where households are unable to afford some of the minimum acceptable standards of living in the countries where they reside. Material deprivation can include lacking at least two out of a list of nine items considered important in a society. Some essential items included for measurement might be adequate heating of home or dwelling, consumption of meat of chicken at least every second day, ability to afford a one week annual holiday away from home etc.

The level of resources needed to avoid material deprivation vary across countries so there can be different indicators for it depending on the nation involved.
