About Hyalgan
-
Hyalgan is a fluid that is injected by a doctor into the knee to help reduce joint pain. This fluid is similar to the fluid found naturally around the joints of the body. Injections are typically performed once a week for three weeks and may reduce pain for up to six months. Hyalgan is generally only for those who do not benefit from other treatments, such as physical therapy and other pain relievers.
Side Effects
-
The most common side effects of Hyalgan are mild and include redness or swelling of the injection site, bruising, numbness and a headache. Serious side effects are rare and include hives, breathing problems and swelling of the face. Call a doctor immediately if serious side effects occur.
Warnings
-
Refrain from intense physical activity such as running, weight-lifting and climbing for the first 48 hours after injection. Hyalgan should not be injected if there is an infection in either the knee or the skin around the knee. People allergic to eggs or bird products should not receive injections. Those who are pregnant or nursing should consult a doctor before receiving injections as Hyalgan could be a danger to fetuses or babies.
