What Herbs Are Harmful for Arthritis?
-
Arnica Montana
-
Generally used as a topical ointment or cream to relieve joint pain and swelling, arnica does not interact with other medications when used externally. However, the University of Maryland Medical Center states you should avoid taking arnica internally because the side effects include heart palpitations, vomiting, and even death. The Center also warns that prolonged topical use may cause irritation to the skin, including blistering and eczema.
Willow Bark
-
The salicin contained in willow bark is a natural form of aspirin. For people allergic to aspirin, the use of willow bark is detrimental. Willow bark may also cause ulcers and stomach bleeding. Fluid retention is another side effect of willow bark, so the herb may cause problems for people who suffer from heart disease or high blood pressure. If you suffer from diabetes or asthma, you should also avoid taking willow bark.
Thunder God Vine
-
Every part of the thunder god vine is poisonous except for the inner sections of the root. Even the skin of the root is considered poisonous. Studies have shown that even though root extract of the vine does relieve the effects of arthritis, its side effects are harmful. Thunder god vine reduces bone density in women and should be avoided if you suffer from osteoporosis. The vine also decreases sperm count in men, and may cause hair loss and skin rashes.
