What medication is used for first line therapy in treating osteoarthritis?

Acetaminophen (paracetamol)

Acetaminophen is the first line treatment for pain in osteoarthritis. It is generally an effective and safe analgesic for most patients. It is especially effective for patients with mild disease or those with contraindications to NSAIDs. Acetaminophen rarely causes upper GI side effects, can worsen pre-existing liver damage and may cause rash/hematological side effects. For patients who require chronic use of acetaminophen it is advisable to limit use to < 3 g per day. It should be avoided in patients with alcohol abuse, poor liver function and active liver disease.
