Instructions for Prefilled Enbrel Etanercept

Enbrel is prescribed to individuals who have moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. According to Enbrel's website at www.enbrel.com, it is used to reduce symptoms, prevent joint damage from worsening and improve physical functioning in patients. Enbrel is delivered as an injection. It is designed to be used under supervision of your medical provider. You should only self-inject after being trained on procedure and dosing. The following will describe how to use the pre-filled Enbrel; however, these instructions should not substitute for training from your doctor.
  1. Preparing for the Injection

    • Prepare for the injection. Gather the supplies you will need. These include alcohol wipes, cotton balls or gauze, puncture resistant disposable container and your pre-filled Enbrel. After removing one of the Enbrels, return the box to the refrigerator. Make sure the expiration date has not passed the last day of the month listed. Also visually inspect for discoloration or large particles. If this is present, do not use. Small white particles are acceptable.

    Choosing Injection Site

    • Wait about 15 to 30 minutes so that the medication is closer to room temperature. When ready to begin, wash hands thoroughly. Then choose your site of injection. This site should be firm and devoid of bruises, sores, stretch marks, redness and inflammation. The preferred site is the front of the thigh. Wipe the site with alcohol wipes and do not touch it again before the injection.

    Preparing the Syringe

    • Remove the white cap by pulling. Do not twist it. Don't touch the purple button as you press the prefilled Enbrel directly onto the injection site at a 90 degree angle. This will unlock the safety guard. Keep the pressure going to fully retract the guard.

    Injecting

    • Press quickly the purple button. Release it immediately. Keep up the pressure for at least 15 seconds, waiting for the injection to complete. When finished, press a cotton ball or gauze onto the site if there is some bleeding. Do not rub the site. If necessary, cover the site with a bandage. Throw away the syringe in a puncture free receptacle, separate from other trash. If you have any questions or concerns, call your physician or 1-888-4ENBREL.
