Treatment for Ilio-Femoral Bursitis

Ilio-femoral bursitis causes pain and inflammation in the hip joint. This is often a debilitating condition that makes difficult the activities of daily living.
  1. Identification

    • The ilio-femoral ligament attaches the pelvis to the femur. This ligament works to prevent over-extension of the hip joint. Ilio-femoral bursitis occurs when there is inflammation inside the hip joint, causing pain in the ligament.

    Symptoms

    • The most common symptoms of are pain in the hip joint, pain upon walking, and pain when placing the hip joint on stretch (when reaching to the floor).

    Medications

    • NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are commonly prescribed in the treatment of arthritis and bursitis. This medication may help to reduce the inflammation and pain that occurs with these conditions. There are over-the-counter NSAID medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen that may help relieve the pain of bursitis. Meloxicam is a prescription NSAID medication often prescribed for the treatment of bursitis.

    Physical Therapy

    • Doctors may prescribe physical therapy for those suffering from ilio-femoral bursitis. The physical therapist may use treatment modalities such as heat and exercise to help relieve the pain and discomfort that often accompanies bursitis.

    Rest

    • The pain from ilio-femoral bursitis is often relieved by rest. This may give the inflammation in the hip joint time to subside. If rest does not provide any pain relief, contact your health care provider.
