Physical Therapy for Lumbar Facet Arthritis
Lumbar facet arthritis can be the cause of significant pain in the lower back. When the cartilage between discs gets worn away or the spinal discs get knocked off track, lumbar facet arthritis can be the result. Your physician will likely prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to keep swelling and pain to a minimum. He will also ask you to do strengthening and aerobic exercises to improve lower back function.-
Exercise Band Stretch
-
Use an exercise band to increase strength and flexibility in the lower back. Step on an exercise band with your right foot and put the other end in your right hand. Take your right hand and pull it straight overhead. Return your right hand to a position near your right hip. Do this 12 times, take a 30-second break and repeat the set. Do the same exercise with your left foot and left leg.
Leg Extension
-
Get on the floor on all fours. Put most of your weight on your arms. Extend your left leg behind you so that it is even with your back. Extend your toes. Return your left leg to the starting position. Do this 12 times, take a 30-second break and repeat the set. Do the same exercise with your right leg. You will feel pressure in the lumbar area but you should not feel pain.
Forward Roll on Exercise Ball
-
Lie on your stomach on the exercise ball. Your arms should be on the side of the ball. Roll down the ball so just your chest and shoulders are over the middle of the ball. Roll back up to the starting position. Do this 12 times, take a 30-second break and repeat the set. This is a non-stressful exercise that will give you increased flexibility in the lumbar region.
