Unexplained Joint & Muscle Pain

Joint pain is discomfort that stems from any joint, or point on your body where two bones connect. Muscle pain can range from mild to intense aches involving one or more muscles. Joint and muscle pain can be caused by a variety of conditions or injuries, many minor.
  1. Muscle Aches

    • Muscle aches are most commonly caused by stress, tension or minor injuries. Overuse of a muscle may also cause soreness. If the pain only affects one area of your body, it is likely that one of these symptoms is the cause. Soreness all over the body, or systemic muscle pain, could be caused by an illness or infection.

    Arthritis

    • Joint pain is sometimes called arthritis and can range in severity. Moderate joint pain can be a slight pain from movement, such as with your elbows or knees. More serious arthritis can hinder your ability to bend joints at all. The Mayo Clinic says joint pain is rarely an emergency and can be treated at home.

    Rheumatoid Arthritis

    • Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic joint disorder that causes the joints in your hands and feet to become inflamed. It affects the lining of your joints, causing painful swelling. Left untreated, rheumatoid arthritis can lead to bone erosion or joint deformity.

    When to See a Doctor

    • If joint or muscle pain lasts longer than a week, you might have a serious muscle strain. See a doctor immediately if you have signs of infection, such as a fever or rash. If there is intense swelling, warmth or redness at your joints, seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a serious condition such as Lupus or Lyme disease.

    Relief

    • With minor joint and muscle problems, stretching and exercise can be helpful in relieving pain. Rest, massage, and soaking in a warm baths are also helpful. If swelling has occurred, ice packs, compressions and elevating the affected area all assist in relieving the pain.
