Parrafin for Arthritis Pain
Arthritis pain, whether from osteo or rheumatoid arthritis, can be relieved by the application of heat. Paraffin wax treatments can not only provide safe, effective heat therapy, but it can be repeated as often as desired with no side-effects.-
How Paraffin Helps Relieve Pain
-
Paraffin wax has a low melting point, low enough that it can be applied to the skin without fear of burning. The warm sensation of molten wax soothes arthritis pain by loosening the muscles, increasing the blood flow and relaxing the hands. In addition, essential oils can be added which help soothe pain and promote relaxation.
Immersion in Paraffin Wax
-
Use a paraffin wax appliance to melt the wax to a temperature that is safe for the skin. Immerse one hand in the melted wax two or more times, allowing the wax to harden and cool slightly between immersions. Build up several layers of paraffin wax before wrapping.
Wrap the Hands
-
Wrap the hand in a plastic bag, such as a grocery bag or produce bag. Follow that with a large, thick towel. This helps trap the heat from the wax close to the skin. The plastic bags will prevent the soft wax from getting onto the towel, possibly ruining the towel or at least rendering it useless for anything other than paraffin treatments.
Allow the Wax to Harden
-
Allow the wax to harden for 20 minutes or more. During this time, a relaxing forearm massage can be performed with the free hand. Using small circles, apply lotion working from the wrist to the elbow, feeling for any tense muscles along the forearm. This massage will complement the relaxing heat from the paraffin, as well as help pass the time.
Removing the Wax and Repeating
-
Unwrap the towel and remove the plastic bag, then carefully roll the wax off from the wrist to the fingers. In addition to leaving the skin soft and smooth, paraffin wax will also remove dead skin, excess skin oil and dirt. This can leave the skin vulnerable, so moisturizer should be used to ensure the skin does not dry.
