Tips on How to Use an Inhaler

An inhaler is a handheld device that administers medication directly to your airway quickly and with fewer side effects than oral or IV medications. According to WebMD, inhalers are the most effective method of administering lifesaving medications to patients with asthma and other lung and respiratory diseases. Inhalers come with either anti-inflammatory steroids, beta-2 agonist medication or a combination of both. Knowing how to use your inhaler correctly and following your physician's instructions is essential.
  1. Always Shake It

    • Always shake your inhaler well before each use. Shaking the inhaler helps to ensure your medication is available when you take a puff.

    Use a Spacer

    • Using a spacer is not always necessary, but in many cases it does help administer the medication more efficiently. A spacer looks like either a cylindrical chamber or a face mask. You attach your inhaler to one end and inhale from the other end. Seal your lips around the spacer during use. According to the Harvard Medical School's Family Health Guide, if you are not using a spacer you should hold the inhaler about 4 inches from your face with your mouth open.

    Hold Your Breath

    • Exhale completely before taking your puff. Hold your breath for ten seconds with each puff from the inhaler. This will ensure the medicine reaches your lungs. Then wait 30 seconds before taking another puff.

    Rinse Your Mouth

    • Rinse your mouth and gargle after each use if you are using a inhaler that contains a steroid. You can use water or mouthwash. If you are using a face mask spacer with a steroid, wash your face with a mild soap after each use.

    Wipe Mouthpiece

    • Wipe your mouthpiece after each use; also wipe your spacer or mask. This prevents the spread of germs. Store the inhaler in a cool, dry place.

    Good Posture

    • Make sure you are sitting up or standing straight when you use your inhaler. Good posture helps naturally expand the lungs so the medication can be more effective.

    Practice Use

    • Run through the steps of using your inhaler before you actually need it so you are well-versed in performing the task. Also, use your inhaler in front of your physician so you can be certain you are doing it correctly.

    Exhale before Use

    • Before you use your inhaler, empty your lungs. This allows you to inhale more medication when you take your puff. In addition to this, make sure you breathe through your mouth and not your nose when you are using your inhaler.
