How to Use a Spacer With an MDI
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology estimate that 300 million people suffer from asthma. A metered dose inhaler, or MDI, is one type of medication delivery system that many asthmatics use. To get the greatest amount of medication possible into the bronchial tubes, a spacer is a tool recommended by physicians. A spacer is a plastic tube you attach to your MDI. When used properly, a spacer makes the medication droplets smaller and delivers more of the medication into the bronchial tubes.Instructions

1
Shake your inhaler several times and remove the cap.
-
2
Place the mouthpiece of the inhaler into the spacer.
-
3
Exhale fully, and place the other end of the spacer into your mouth. The spacer should be between the teeth, with your lips wrapped snugly around it. Be sure that your tongue is under the spacer, not blocking the pathway of the medications.
-
4
Press the inhaler once. This will release the medication into the chamber of the spacer.
-
5
Inhale slowly and deeply. If you hear a whistling sound you are inhaling too quickly. Make sure you are taking a full breath in.
-
6
Remove the spacer from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds. Then slowly exhale.
-
7
Wait one minute between doses if you require a second dose.
-
8
Wash the spacer with warm soapy water and allow it to air dry.
