Spiriva Safety
Spiriva is a prescription medication that's used to relieve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, such as coughing and difficulty breathing. The medicine is a powder that's taken orally with an inhaler device called a HandiHaler.-
Swallowing
-
Capsules containing Spiriva powder shouldn't be swallowed. Swallowing it prevents the medicine from performing its intended function, which is relaxing the airways in your lungs and keeping them open.
Allergic Reaction
-
People who are allergic to the drugs tiotropium and ipratropium, or to milk proteins, shouldn't use Spiriva. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling in the mouth, throat or tongue, and a rash.
Report Severe Side Effects
-
Side effects like constipation and dry mouth are expected when taking Spiriva. But if you experience more serious ones, such as paradoxical bronchospasm (your airway is constricted after taking the medicine) or sudden/increased pressure in your eyes, get medical help immediately.
Eyes
-
Avoid getting Spiriva powder in your eyes. This can cause pupil dilation and blurred vision. Call your doctor if this occurs.
Pregnancy
-
Because adequate testing hasn't been done on women using Spiriva during pregnancy, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding shouldn't use the drug unless directed by their physician.
