How to Use My Turbo Inhaler

Lung ailments such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cause airways to be chronically inflamed and swollen. Although there is no cure, the symptoms of these illnesses can be controlled with various types of inhalers. Aerosol inhalers such as Ventolin are used to stop an asthma attack, and turbo inhalers such as Pulmicort are used for prevention. Like all inhalers, turbo inhalers must be used properly to yield maximum benefits.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the accompanying pamphlet and all directions before using your turbo inhaler. Be sure to follow your physician's directions as to how often you should use the inhaler.

    • 2

Wash your hands well with soap and water, making sure they are thoroughly dry before handling the inhaler and especially the medicine. The medicine will be in a gel cap, which can be ruined by moisture and heat.

    • 3

Open the foil or plastic packaging, checking first for signs of tampering. Turbo inhalers, unlike aerosol inhalers, must be loaded with medicine, which will be packaged separately.

    • 4

Hold the inhaler as instructed in the patient pamphlet. Since not all turbo inhalers are the same, it is important to follow the package directions. Twist open the turbo inhaler.

    • 5

Insert the capsule into the appropriate section of the inhaler, typically in the center of the propeller.

    • 6

Close the inhaler, then twist it back together, puncturing the capsule; it is now loaded and ready for use.

    • 7

Place the inhaler near your mouth -- no more than a few inches away. Exhale deeply.

    • 8

Place the mouthpiece into your mouth immediately after exhaling. Breathe in strongly and quickly, being sure not to allow your teeth or tongue to block the flow of the medication into your lungs.

    • 9

Hold your breath for at least ten seconds.

    • 10

Exhale, then repeat and then repeat steps 8 and 9 until the medication is gone.

    • 11

Gargle and use mouthwash after using your inhaler; turbo inhalers contain oral steroids that can cause damage if left inside your mouth.
