Correct Inhaler Techniques
A variety of asthma drugs are dispensed by inhaler. Correct usage is vital to achieve efficient symptom relief because it is the only way to ensure that the maximum amount of medication per dose reaches the bronchial passages. Two main types of asthma inhaler are the metered dose inhaler, which contains medication in aerosol form, and the dry powder inhaler, which dispenses medication in a powdered form. Whichever inhaler you use, you should take it to your doctor at each visit to show him your technique so he can rectify any flaws.-
Metered Dose Inhaler - Instructions
-
Read the instructions before you use the inhaler for the first time to ensure the steps are fresh in your mind. It is preferable, although not essential, to shake the inhaler for five to 10 seconds before every use. Remove the cap and place your mouth around the mouthpiece to form a firm seal. Slowly and deeply breathe in through the mouth (never the nose) and simultaneously press down on the canister. Pressing the canister will spray one metered dose into your mouth. By breathing deeply, you carry the medication further into your lungs. If you have not used the inhaler for longer than two weeks, "prime" the canister by first squeezing two or three puffs into the air. You will also need to do this before you use your inhaler for the very first time. Hold your breath for 10 seconds. Slowly breathe out. If you need to take a second puff, wait for one minute before repeating the procedure. This will allow the second dose to act on the lungs more efficiently.
Metered Dose Inhaler - Maintenance

Keep your inhaler clean. To clean your inhaler, remove the canister and rinse the plastic cover for one minute. Leave the cover to dry and then reinsert the inhaler. Ask your doctor how long the inhaler will last assuming you use it as prescribed. Write the date your inhaler is due to run out on the canister to ensure you don't forget to refill your prescriptions.
Dry Powder Inhaler - General Instructions
-
Read the instructions before you use the inhaler for the first time to ensure the steps are fresh in your mind. Different models of dry powder inhaler are available and usage instructions vary slightly depending on which model you are prescribed. Ensure that your doctor gives you clear instructions for usage. The general technique is the same between models, however.
Dry Powered Inhaler - Inhaling and Exhaling
-
Breathe out all the way, and then remove the cap. Place your mouth around the mouthpiece to form a firm seal. Take a fast, deep breath in over three seconds. This will draw the powdered medication from the inhaler and into your lungs. You do not need to press a canister to release medication with these types of inhalers. This makes them useful for patients who have difficulty coordinating their inhalation with the compression of a canister. Hold your breath for up to 10 seconds and then breathe out slowly.
