Characteristics of Wheezing

Wheezing is a whistling sound that occurs when a person is breathing through blocked airways. Wheezing is usually a symptom of asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia or allergic reactions. The common cold also can cause an obstruction in the airways that might cause wheezing. Although there are many causes of wheezing, the condition has just a few specific characteristics.

Whistling Sound

• The main characteristic of wheezing is a high-pitched whistling sound when breathing out. This sound is caused by air moving through narrowed tubes.

Short Breaths

• A wheezing person is often unable to take deep breaths because obstructed airways will not allow sufficient airflow. Wheezing is usually accompanied by short, shallow breaths.

Dizziness

• Wheezing can cause dizziness because of a lack of oxygen. Medicinal inhalers are generally used to open up blocked airways.

Blurry Vision and Black Spots

• People suffering from wheezing will sometimes experience blurred vision and see black spots. This is caused by a lack of oxygen because of obstructed airflow.
