    • Singulair is the brand name of montelukast, a prescription medication used to forestall asthma attacks and allergy symptoms. Singulair is typically taken once daily.

    Function

    • Singulair blocks the function of a chemical in the body called leukotriene. In response to allergens, leukotriene causes swelling of the lungs and constriction of the muscles surrounding airways.

    Anxiety

    • Drugs.com lists mood disturbances including anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts among the possible serious side effects of Singulair.

    Warning

    • According to the Food and Drug Administration, “neuropsychiatric events” including anxiety, agitation, aggression and suicidal behavior have been reported by users of Singulair.

    Considerations

    • The FDA recommends that users of Singulair consult their physicians if such neuropsychiatric events occur. The FDA also recommends that physicians discontinue Singulair for patients who experience neuropsychiatric side effects.
