Natural Treatment for Asthma Control Prevention

Though there is no natural cure or guaranteed prevention, there are numerous natural treatments that can reduce the symptoms of asthma, a condition in which the lungs can become inflamed, making it difficult to breathe. Muscle relaxation techniques, breathing and meditation, and diet all can help to reduce the debilitating effects of asthma.
  1. Breathing and Meditation

    • Controlled breathing and meditation can greatly help to reduce stress and aid breathing, thereby reducing the symptoms of asthma. One easy breathing technique is to breathe deeply through your nose and expand your chest while lying down, and then exhale slowly (again through your nose) and tighten the chest and abdominal muscles. This simple exercise will help you to strengthen the muscles that are crucial to breathing normally and healthily. It is also helpful to take some time out of every day and focus on your breathing: Close your eyes, dim the lights and focus on each and every inhalation and exhalation. This meditative focus helps you to relax and regulate your breathing. Also, breathing through your nose allows more oxygen to reach the bloodstream and slows your breathing, which is healthier than quick breaths or hyperventilation.

    Diet

    • Foods high in immune-boosting vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and vitamin C are all recommended for naturally helping to reduce the symptoms of asthma. Another home treatment for asthma is honey; you can either mix about 1 tsp. of honey with a glass of water or mix 1 tsp. of honey with 1 cup of tea. Ingesting honey can help you begin breathing with greater ease. Other helpful natural mixtures are ginger tea, hot water with 1/2 tsp. of licorice root mixed in, and hot water with four to five cloves boiled in the water (honey may be added, as well). Additionally, chewing raw fennel can help to clear the lungs of airway-blocking mucus.

Again, while all of these dietary recommendations can help to reduce asthma symptoms, it is important to remember that none of these foods will prevent asthma symptoms or treat an asthma attack.
