Liquid Medication for Asthma in Children
Asthma is a chronic disease that can affect the function of the lungs and narrow the airways, making it difficult to breathe. Of the 22 million people in the United States that are known to have asthma, approximately 6 million are children. The medications that are used to relieve the symptoms of asthma often come in a liquid form for children.-
Symptoms
-
The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. These symptoms may come on suddenly, especially in children. Many children experience symptoms during exercise or may cough at night or early in the morning.
Albuterol
-
Albuterol is considered a quick relief or rescue medication for those who suffer from asthma. Albuterol comes in an inhaled medication, that can be used in a nebulizer or in a liquid form that can be taken orally. The liquid form may take longer to ease asthma symptoms than the inhaled form of the medication.
Prelone

Prelone is a medication that is given to children in a liquid form to treat the inflammation that is associated with asthma. Prelone is a steroid medication that is prescribed for three to five days, often in conjunction with albuterol.
Pedipred
-
Another liquid corticosteroid commonly prescribed for children is Pedipred. This works similarly to Prelone.
Considerations
-
If your child is prescribed liquid asthma medications be sure to check with your doctor before reducing or increasing the dosage. This will help to avoid any possible adverse effects.
