Albuterol MDI Techniques

For many people with asthma or other lung conditions, use of an inhaler is essential in controlling or stopping an attack. Inhaled medications, such as albuterol, often come in an MDI or metered dose inhaler. The use of these devices is relatively simple. Follow all doctor's directions as to the number of doses you should take and do not overdose.
  1. About the MDI

    • A metered dose inhaler is a plastic holder which contains a pressurized canister of your medication. The mouthpiece is built into the holder and comes with a cap to help keep it clean. Using an MDI ensures a reliable and consistent dose. You can also use spacers with MDIs. The use of spacers helps reduce side effects normally associated with inhaled steroid drugs. Note: Albuterol is not a steroid.

    Using an MDI

    • Once you have removed the cap, shake the canister well. Hold the MDI with your thumb at the mouthpiece and your finger on top. Exhale to empty your lungs. Hold the canister in front of your open mouth. Do not touch it against your lips. With your head tilted slightly, press the canister and breathe in the expelled medicine slowly and deeply. Hold the medicine in your lungs for approximately 10 seconds. Then exhale slowly. If your doctor has prescribed more than one inhalation at a time, wait about one minute before administering the second dose. Replace the cap when you are finished.

Using a Spacer with an MDI

    • The technique is very similar. Remove the cap and shake the canister. Attach the spacer to the end of the MDI's mouthpiece. Exhale completely before placing the end of the spacer in your mouth. Make a tight seal around the spacer with your lips. Press the canister and breathe in, as you would without the spacer. Breathe in slowly. If you hear a horn-like sound, you are pulling in the medicine and air too fast. Hold the medicine in your lungs for a count of 10 before exhaling slowly. Again, repeat if directed to do so by your doctor.
