What Are the Causes of Sudden Asthma?

Symptoms of sudden asthma attacks include wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing and tightness in the chest. Attacks are caused by triggers or irritants that are inhaled.
  1. Proper Lung Function

    • When the airways in your lungs are working properly, they are fully open, and air is allowed to move in and out without restriction.

    Inflammation

    • Asthma can temporarily inflame the lung's airways and cause them to narrow with mucus.

    Allergen Triggers

    • Allergens like pollen, mold, pet dander or dust mites can trigger sudden asthma attacks. Irritants such as scented soaps, smoke and odors from perfumes, paint and sprays can cause asthma episodes.

    Other Factors

    • Sudden asthma attacks can also be caused by unexpected respiratory infections, weather changes (cold air, dry wind) and exercise.

    Statistics

    • Asthma accounts for 2 million emergency room visits each year in the United States, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA).
