How to Assemble a Nebulizer

A nebulizer is a machine used to administer medication treatments that require inhalation. This is common for respiratory ailments, including asthma, when the patient is unable to use a handheld inhaler. The system consists of an air compressor that changes the liquid medication to a mist that is easily inhaled through a mouthpiece. Nebulizer machines are available in home and portable versions.

  1. Using a Nebulizer

    • 1

Wash your hands prior to handling the nebulizer compressor or components. Verify the components are clean prior to use.

    • 2

Set the compressor on a sturdy surface. Do not block the filter hole or set on carpeting where dust or allergens can enter the filter. Plug the cord into a three-prong electrical outlet that is within reach of the compressor.

    • 3

Measure nebulizer medications carefully and pour into the medication cup portion of the components. Many medications are pre-measured in plastic capsules. Open the capsule top and squeeze all liquid into the nebulizer cup if this is the case.

    • 4

Place the cap on top of the nebulizer cup. Screw in place to hold tightly. Attach the mouthpiece to the medication cup. Attach the plastic tubing to the short tube connector at the bottom of the medication cup. Attach the other end of the tubing to the nebulizer compressor.

    • 5

Turn the nebulizer compressor on. A fog mist will start coming out of the mouthpiece unit if everything is connected properly. Place the mouthpiece between the teeth with the lips sealed around it. Breathe in slowly through the mouth, holding each breath for two to three seconds.

    • 6

Continue breathing the medication until the treatment is complete. This will take five to 10 minutes, depending on the quantity of medication. You will hear a sputtering noise when the medication is no longer entering the unit. Shake the medication cup lightly to verify the medication is gone.

    • 7

Turn off the compressor and detach the tubing and components. Rinse the mouthpiece and medicine cup with water and let dry. Do not rinse the tubing.
