Flovent (fluticasone) is a prescription inhalant medication used to prevent symptoms of asthma like wheezing and shortness of breath. Despite its effectiveness, Flovent poses a risk for side effects in some patients.

• Common side effects of Flovent include coughing, body aches, malaise, runny nose, headaches, hoarseness and nose soreness or stuffiness.

Time Frame

• The common side effects of Flovent often occur following the first few doses of the drug. The frequency of these effects is likely to diminish over time as your body becomes accustomed to Flovent.

Features

• If your doctor prescribes Flovent for you after you have been using an oral corticosteroid treatment for asthma, you may experience severe side effects due to an adrenal gland imbalance. These include fatigue, lack of energy, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, weakness, dizziness, dehydration, anxiety and depression.

Risks

• Flovent suppresses your immune system, increasing your risk for developing bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoal infections. In rare instances, use of Flovent may exacerbate symptoms of asthma by causing your airways to constrict.

Considerations

• Because there is no evidence that Flovent does not pose a risk to fetal development, doctors typically avoid prescribing the drug to pregnant women. It you have a history of herpes eye infections or tuberculosis, your doctor may not recommend Flovent due to possible complications with your condition.
