Sodium Bicarbonate & Autism
Proponents state sodium bicarbonate alkalizes and restores the body's pH balance from a state of acidosis (excess acid). Researchers believe acidosis is characteristic in children and adults with autism. Opponents warn there is no scientific evidence linking acidosis to autism.-
Treatment
-
Treat symptoms of autism using sodium bicarbonate therapy without a prescription. The product is available in more than one form including tablet, solution, powder, granule and capsule. Alternatively, use AlkaSeltzer Gold(TM) (a sodium and potassium bicarbonate product).
Effects
-
Sodium bicarbonate reduces stomach acid and decreases acid in the blood and urine. Parents of autistic children report improvement in their child's autistic behaviors after administering sodium bicarbonate therapy.
Considerations
-
Proponents, including some parents and researchers, claim autistic children treated with sodium bicarbonate, usually as an oral solution, exhibit noticeably less autistic symptoms. Opponents advise caution and warn there is no scientific evidence linking autism and acidosis.
Specifc Uses
-
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate and is used as an antacid. You should not administer antacids to children under the age of six.
Doses
-
To administer one adult dose, dissolve one quarter teaspoon of baking soda in 8 oz. of water. Drug stores carry products to counter acidosis and calm gas in children, but you should consult your doctor first.
Other Applications
-
You can treat acidosis externally by dissolving a doctor-recommended measurement of Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate) and baking soda in bath water. Magnesium can lower blood pressure. Baking soda helps the body absorb the magnesium.
