How to Use a Weighted Lizard

Weighing in at approximately 4 lbs., weighted lizards are a type of weighted vest used in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders. Some researchers believe that these weighted items help autistic children understand their bodies and how they move through space. These same researchers hypothesize that this increased level of understanding has a calming influence on the children. The numerous studies conducted on weighted vests have produced inconclusive results. For some children, these vests work miracles, allowing them to sit still and focus for extended periods.

Instructions

      Place the lizard around your neck or your child's neck. Alternatively, you can place the lizard on your lap or your child's lap.

      Engage in or allow your child to engage in fine motor control activities or other activities that require concentration.

    • 3

      Remove the vest after 20 minutes. After a short five or ten minute break, repeat the process.
